As a teenager I played the violin in the New Jersey Youth Symphony and served as its Concert Master. As a late teen, I became interested in jazz and show tunes, and I switched to the saxophone, playing throughout college in a four-piece band. I have been playing the sax ever since, adding some flute and clarinet in later years.
I played violin at SUNY-Orange Orchestra for a short while, then the sax at the SUNY-Orange Symphonic Band and now I have the pleasure of playing with the Maybrook Wind Ensemble. I have been a member of this symphonic group since its inception and I am here because of the high-quality of the musicians and our conductor, Kevin Scott.
Aileen Mahoney began playing bass clarinet in sixth grade after studying clarinet for two years upon the suggestion of her middle school band teacher, and she hasn’t looked back since! A 2004 graduate of Valley Central High School, she received several musical accolades on bass clarinet, including being selected for ensembles at the 2002 and 2003 NYSSMA All-State Conference and the 2003 MENC All-Eastern Honors Band in Providence, RI. She continued her musical studies in college, earning a Bachelor of Music in clarinet and bass clarinet performance from Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus in 2008. While at C.W. Post, Aileen was highly involved in the music department, serving as undergraduate assistant and librarian for bands, and proudly represented the school in the 2007 CBDNA Small College Honors Band in Ann Arbor, MI. She was also selected as a winner in the university’s annual Concerto Competition in 2008 and got to perform her winning solo, Max Bruch’s Kol Nidrei, with the C.W. Post Orchestra. Aileen also had the opportunity to complete some graduate studies at New York University with world-renowned bass clarinetist Dennis Smylie in 2009 and 2010.
Aileen currently resides in Newburgh, NY and is an active performer in the area. In addition to playing bass clarinet with the Maybrook Wind Ensemble, she sings with the Orange County Classic Choral Society, where she has been selected as a soloist on several occasions, and serves as the soprano section leader and soloist for the choir at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Tuxedo Park, NY. She is also a member of SoundTrax, a folk and classic rock trio founded by her father and uncle, which has performed all over the Hudson Valley.
